Lucca is two different design problems in one city. Inside the walls you work with protected buildings: thick masonry, original beams, tall shuttered windows, rooms with no right angles and a permanent battle between daylight and depth. Outside the walls you get farmhouses and villas with generous volumes, terracotta floors and outdoor living that has to work from April to October.
My Lucca projects cover both. A villa outside the city furnished for holiday rental, and an office in the Centro Storico where the layout had to fit a historic shell without fighting it. In both cases the same sequence applied: understand the building, set one direction, source and commission what fits, furnish on site, and photograph the result.

What Lucca asks of an interior
Light before furniture
Small openings in thick walls mean daylight arrives in narrow beams. A layered lighting plan and pale, warm surfaces do more for these rooms than any single piece.
Custom sizes are the rule
In old buildings almost nothing standard fits. Measured, made-to-size pieces are usually cheaper than a catalogue solution that never quite works.
Materials that suit the building
Lime paint, solid wood, linen, handmade ceramics, wrought iron. They cope with heat and humidity, and they look right against terracotta and old plaster.
Empty weeks matter
Houses used seasonally stand closed for long stretches. Choices are made for that: robust textiles, nothing that warps, and interiors that need little to look ready again.

- Yes. All plans, moodboards, shopping lists and budgets are in English, and I deal with Italian suppliers and workshops on your behalf.

- I have done exactly that: an office in the Centro Storico of Lucca, in a building where nothing is square and the ceilings are original. Working in a protected building means custom sizes, careful colour choices and material that suits the fabric of the house.
- What if my house is outside Lucca?
